May Update

ByKevin Williams
Darkness into Light Swim …….We were one of 3 swimming clubs in the country to organise a Darkness into Light Swim as an alternative to the walk / run . Organised by Kevin Williams , swimmers and crew arrived in Fenit at 4.45am and got ready to swim with light sticks attached . The swim began in darkness at 5am and finished at 5.30 just as the sky cleared and a magnificent sunrise brightened everyone’s morning . 19 swimmers took part and were ably managed in the water with kayak support from John and Eoin Edwards . Well done to all.
Swimming conditions ….. May has been a poor start to the season with below average temperatures of both air and water .. Water temps are hovering between 10.5 and 12 degrees . This has led to a noticeable decrease in evening swimming activity . Hopefully the temps will be rising soon .
World Series Round 1 …….The first round of our World Series took place last Thursday evening in poor conditions . Heavy rain turned into a light mist for the swim with a slight chop on the water . As it was the first dip of the year for a many , there were more than a few shocked faces as they entered the water .! However it did not deter as 74 swimmers took part . Brothers Michael and Brendan OConnell battled to the finish for fastest time of the night with our Special Olympic Swimmer Brendan just being pipped at the post . Our new club duty roster had 12 swimmers helping out with kayaking and timing . There is about another 25 swimmers yet to start , so it looks like a busy season ahead . Congratulations to the 3 Group winners . A Alan Murphy , B Siobhain Griffin and C Martin Grealish .
Round 2 will take place on Thursday the 4th of June , not the 5th as advertised . We might even have a barbecue if the weather allows !

April Update

The 2015 swim nights are nearly upon us and we hope you have all wintered well. To this end, your club membership is now due and should be sorted out before the first swim, as we cannot guarantee registration on the night. You can give the form and money to any committee member. Please also indicate if you need a new race numbered hat. This will cost an extra 5 euro.

The handicaps are currently being done and we need this info to ensure things go smoothly! The club membership fee has increased to 50 euro for a competing member and 70 euro for a family. Non competing membership stays the same at 20 euro. This still represents excellent value for money and includes 8 competitive swims, 4 barbecues and great craic !

With increasing numbers taking part every year we are being stretched to the limit for help . This is your club and we need your help. So , at the recent AGM it was decided that all competing members, MUST give up one swim night to help out with club duties.

You will still receive 1 point towards the Swimmer of The Year. There will be a form to download shortly on The Facebook Group Page and you can indicate which night you will help and choose which duty you wish to carry out ie Barbecue , Timing , Or Kayaking. The club has purchased 7 new kayaks and gear which brings our total to 10. If you wish to kayak on a night , we will be running a Kayak course with John Edwards in the next couple of weeks and you will have to do this . If you decide not to help out you will NOT be eligible for points or prizes .

Flag Day and Church Gate Collection

The Club Flag Day and Church Gate Collection takes place on 23 May and 30/31 May. Everybody who helps out for a slot will, as last year, receive 1 point towards The Swimmer Of The Year. Last year this one point almost made the difference between winning and losing ! So please help out!
